Business cards: Overcoming the out-of-mind / trash test

When you hand over your business card to a client, what are the chances that the client will remember you when the need arises? Where do you think your card ends up in the pile? Do you think the client has time to go sifting through the pile to find “that guy that was here last Tuesday?”

Think about what you do with the business cards people give you. They mostly go into a pile in a drawer, and if you’re more organized, into a card file. In either case, the business cards just sit there, out of view, and probably out of mind. Worse still, you may bin it. What a waste! This is called the out-of-mind / trash test.

To overcome this hurdle, it is prudent that effort, creativity and innovation go into how a business card is designed and how it looks. Instead of the traditional business card, get your contact information printed on something that people might leave in plain sight, something that will remind them of you and your services or products whenever they look at it.

You can get information printed on just about anything now. What about using something like wood, aluminum and plastic other than the usual card stock.

A card that does not pass the out-of-mind / trash test is as good as having no card at all.
